I started working at MBC in 2007 as a Customer Service Advisor. After general training and learning about the Council and its customers, I began to learn to process council tax and business rates. As MBC want to invest in their staff, I was given the opportunity to undertake a 2 year qualification for the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation and qualified at technician level. As I am keen on developing my career into a more team leader role, when the chance arose I was interviewed and given the opportunity to become a Senior Advisor. This involved managing the admin team, preparing rotas, 121’s and also a chance to develop and take over some of the roles of the team leaders whilst continuing as a Customer Service Advisor. This gave me a closer insight into what was required to become a team leader.
I then read that there was an opportunity for staff to put themselves forward for a management development programme (MDP). To be able to go for this, we had to write why we felt they would benefit and also get a manager to write to say why they thought we would be the right candidate.
I was lucky enough to be selected for the course which looked at many modules from dealing with HR issues to recruitment to presenting with confidence, all areas required in management. I used the skills gained in recruitment when interviewing for new apprentices and customer service advisors and I have also helped out on interview panels in other departments.
After completing the MDP I felt that I was ready to take on the role of the team leader so applied for secondment to cover maternity leave. I was successful in this and have been working as a Customer Service team leader for last 6 months during which time I have undertaken projects, completed staff appraisals, looked at staff development and how I can help invest in other members of MBC.
